This One Goes To Eleven - Sip of GIN: Friday, August 3, 2018

In the movie, “This Is Spinal Tap” Nigel the guitarist is being interviewed and talks about the maximum volume of his amplifier. Nigel says, "This one goes to eleven… It's one louder, isn't it?" The interviewer then asks, “ Why don't you just make ten louder and make ten be the top number and make that a little louder?” Nigel stares blankly for a second and says, "These go to eleven." It’s a funny scene in a funny movie; yet, there is something about maximum effort that is admirable.

In the book The Law of Success in Sixteen Lessons Napoleon Hill talks about the habit of doing more than paid for. This lesson doesn’t mean to work endless hours working for someone who doesn’t appreciate what you do, it means, that you must do something that you love. “When engaged in work which he loves, a man may labor for an unbelievably long period of hours without becoming fatigued. Work that a man dislikes or hates brings on fatigue very quickly.” In other words, you’re actually working to be happy. Thus, doing more than paid for is about you and the satisfaction you get from doing something that you love.

*And, if you are an employer, this is not an invitation to take advantage of your people. Remember, “build your people and your people will build your business.” In the position of leadership, words only go so far. Show your people you appreciate them. Actions speak louder than words.

Love,
