The Mayfly

Mayflies are quirky little bugs that that exist all over the world. The Mayfly doesn't bite or sting, they don't destroy trees or other plants, they don't even really show up in "May"; they just arrive between the end of spring to the end of summer and swarm near fresh water. Fly fishermen use them (or their likeness) as bait and they have many positive effects on local ecosystems. And they've been featured in art and literature since Aristotle. There isn't even anything special about the way they look; they resemble a dragonfly riding a backwards caterpillar. The most notable thing about Mayflies is that they only live for 24 hours. A long enough lifespan to be born, eat, mate and fly towards the light (literally, as they are known to swarm near streetlamps). 24 hours of everything they'll ever do. To the Mayfly, one day equals one lifetime.

Compared to a Mayfly, we get so many days in our lifetime. Yet we only get so many of them. What is a day to you? You're busy with work, life, family, obligations and love. There are always so many responsibilities. Do you appreciate each and every day for what it is? This is the day – you can make the decision to make it amazing. Do you take the time to laugh and enjoy each moment? Don't overwhelm yourself with the thought, it's not that hard. You don't need to rush off and experience everything as if you only have 24 hours. Enjoy what you can and let the anxiety of nothingness go. When there is pain in your life, remember that this too shall pass. Hurt and pain are temporary and why waste one of your days on something (or someone) small? So, if you're on vacation or just sitting at your desk, make it the best you can.

Love,
Joel Yeast
